Mazapán Mazapán is a Peruvian musical group founded in Lima, Peru in 1979. "Mazapan" means "The Sea Turtle" in the Quechua language. Mazapán, which means "The sea turtle", is a Peruvian group formed in 1979 in Lima, Peru. Its first lineup consisted of bass player Luis Gutiérrez Cano, guitarist Alejandro Rodríguez and vocalist Rafael Salas, who were later replaced by Álvaro Navarrete and Alberto Garcia 'Alberto Luna'. They became a popular sensation in the Peruvian music scene with hits like "The Sea Turtle", "Sígueme," "Cara Y Tu Cara," "La Chiquita Margarita" and "Antologia Vol. 1." Their most recent lineup includes bassist Ernesto Navarrete and guitarist Alberto Rodriguez. Biography Mazapán was formed in Lima, Peru in 1979 by Luis Gutiérrez Cano (bass guitar), Rafael Salas (vocals), Alberto García Luna (keyboards) and Alejandro Rodríguez (guitar). They were originally called "La Cíclope" but soon changed it to "Mazapan". Their first musical success came with the hit "The Sea Turtle". Their name is a double pun, since "Mazapan" means "The Sea Turtle" in the Quechua language and also stands for "Lima por la zona norte" (Lima, the north of Lima). After their first success they changed bass player. The new bass player was Ernesto Navarrete, previously from Peruvian band "Menudo." Their first album as Mazapán was released in 1980. Their second album was released in 1981, and their third one was released in 1983. The last album by Mazapán was released in 1986. They had many big hits in Peru and also in Latin America.
